AFRICAN QUEEN was created during the Black Lives Matter protests. I was thinking of my childhood in Africa, the beauty of the people, their inner strength and the complex position they held in our personal lives, compared to the public sphere. The Queen emerged almost as if conjured whilst I was playing with lines. Her long braided hair, full red lips, and strong head, held high, signify inner resolve. Here she is in a moment of repose, considering whether to turn and face your gaze head-on or ignore your indiscretion. This image is a homage to all Black woman who are stepping into their own power.
